Oak Floors

Characteristics of hardwood flooring

All wood products are subject to expansion and contraction relative to temperature and humidity. Most wood floors in a home will move according to the relative humidity that is present in the home. In the winter months when homeowners turn own their heat, they may notice changes in there hardwood floors. Unless they have a humidifier in there heating system the flooring may shrink  and allow the flooring to separate. This condition is temporary and should return to normal when the humidity returns to the same as it was when the floor was installed. Installing a humidifier will most definitely help this situation. The humidity should be between 45 and 60 percent at all times.

Care Of Hardwood Flooring

Use doormats and or area rugs by door entries to help prevent dirt sand and grit from entering the house. Install felt furniture pads on all furniture. Many furniture manufacturers ship their products with plastic feet that will scratch your floor. Food beverages and other spills and tracked on dirt  should be cleaning immediately. Walking on a hardwood floor with spiked heels or any sharp objects should be avoided.

Patching in new flooring into an old floor

When weaving a new floor into and old floor, there may be variation in color and grain. The only way for all flooring to be the same is to replace the entire floor.

Floor Tips

Good maintainence practices can extend the life of a hardwood floor finish for many years. However, there comes a time in the life of every hardwood floor for it to be refinished due to worn spots and the erosion of the old finish. Sanding the floor down, staining if needed, and and new urethane will bring your hardwood floor back to like new .
